Between a Rock and a Hard Place

“Do client servicing” they said, “it will be fun”, they said.
But it is fun, mostly, maybe.

If a marketing firm were characters of a chick flick, the client servicing would be the frenemy
who you eventually warm up to. Keeping the copy and design be on their toes, sometimes
even literally. The client servicing is the backbone of a Digital Marketing Agency.

For those who are wondering, what Client Servicing(CS) does? We are the line of
communication between the clients and the creative team. Sounds easy enough, right?
What could go right between communicating between the client and the creatives?
There are small mistakes, like spelling errors that go unchecked or larger errors like when you
promised the customers that the dinosaurs at your amusement park would be tame and instead they got eaten
alive (perhaps, if Jurassic park had invested in a good CS team, they would all still be
alive). The CS covers all of this and then some.

But it’s not all bad. Because of our close relationship with the clients, more often than not,
we receive most of the job perks, often including free pizza, drinks and other fun
goodies.

So, is CS for you? Here’s a bunch of character traits that could help you decide whether or
not CS is your big gig:
– Great communication skills: Now this one is an obvious trait, and speaks for itself.
– Having an open mind: Ideas from the client and the creative will keep changing and
may not be exactly what you expected, but that doesn’t always mean it won’t work.
Being open to new ideas helps both the client and creative work around it
and keep the content fresh.
– Have great problem solving abilities: What often happens is that clients may not be able to clearly explain what they need, it’s up to the CS to understand what they want and how to execute it.
– Be great at thinking on your feet: Being able to come up with solutions in short periods of time is
essential for a good CS. But this point could also hold for great dancing skills, which
honestly, doesn’t hurt your chances of being good at CS.

If you think you got these traits down, you should probably consider trying out for a CS role.
And don’t worry, the next time you tell people who want to do CS they’ll be cool with it, mostly
because they’ll all assume you are talking about computer science instead.
